Overview

A deeply personal campaign following real New Zealanders and their long-term aspirations — building homes, starting businesses, growing families. Our VFX work was deliberately invisible: environment extensions to transform suburban streets into idealised neighbourhoods, sky replacements to set the perfect mood, meticulous cleanup to remove modern intrusions from period sequences, and seamless transitions between time periods that made decades feel like moments. The goal was to support the emotional storytelling without ever drawing attention to the effects, letting the human stories take centre stage while we quietly made every frame feel cinematic.

Process & Approach

Invisible VFX Philosophy

The director's vision demanded that every VFX shot feel completely authentic — no one should ever suspect they're looking at visual effects. This informed our entire approach: we prioritised subtlety over spectacle, restraint over showmanship. Every creative decision was filtered through the question: "Would a viewer notice this?"

Invisible VFX Philosophy

Environment Extensions

We extended suburban streets and rural landscapes to create idealised versions of New Zealand neighbourhoods. This meant adding trees that didn't exist, extending fences, replacing distant buildings, and adding atmospheric haze to create depth. Every addition was art-directed to feel like it had always been there — nothing too perfect, nothing too pristine.

Environment Extensions

Time Period Transitions

The narrative spanned decades, requiring seamless visual transitions between eras. We aged and de-aged environments using a combination of texture replacement, colour grading shifts, and carefully art-directed set extensions. A 1990s street needed different cars, signage, vegetation density, and sky quality than its 2020s counterpart — all achieved through compositing rather than production design.

Sky Replacement & Mood

New Zealand's weather is notoriously unpredictable, and the shoot spanned multiple days with wildly varying conditions. We replaced skies in over half the shots to maintain emotional consistency within each scene — golden hour warmth for hopeful moments, soft overcast for reflective passages, dramatic cloud formations for pivotal decisions.
